Our Mascot

After World War I, beer brewing in Bohemia was a very competitive business. Emanuel Ringhoffer, the owner of the brewery, decided to embrace the local tradition of brewing a dark and strong beer, known as billy-goat beer. Several breweries in Bohemia used to make this type of beer, but beer from Velké Popovice soon defeated competitors thanks to its renowned quality. And so on 1 March 1922 Kozel became the registered trademark of the Velké Popovice brewery.

And that is how we got our typical name. Right about this time a great French painter was passing through Velké Popovice and was deeply moved by the hospitality of local people, so as a gesture of gratitude he offered to create a logo for their local brewery. The painter was inspired by a billy goat and used this image to create our mascot, which was used for nearly a century. Since then the brewery was called Velkopopovický kozel. .

During the thirties owners of the brewery tried to strengthen the unique position of the best beer and brought a billy goat, the size of a calf, to the brewery. The keeper often combed its hair and polished its horns, making the billy goat very well-groomed and so it became the focus of attention of visitors and it has remained so until this day...

The story of a billy goat in a brewery

Former and current mascots of the Kozel brewery

This long tradition of billy goats in the brewery was renewed in the seventies. The former billy goat Olda got his name after his keeper Oldřich Lenca, who also worked in the brewery as a bottle filler. Out of respect the name Olda was given to each new billy goat which took over the role of the brewery mascot.
